Why this Championship?
Some say "blockchain is a solution looking for a problem"

The inaugural African Blockchain Championship was founded to change that. To bring opportunities to talent across Africa to explore the tools offered by the technological frontier.

Blockchain matters in Africa. Why?

Because this is where the lack of transparency leads to money being siphoned to undeserving pockets, and where middlemen abuse their positions of power.

Decentralisation, transparency and inclusive accountability matter here more than anywhere else.

Partners

We partnered with Teodor Petricevic and the UNDP AltFinLab team to help our builders set sights on the real problems!

And we also partnered with world-leading blockchain and AI protocols to support our builders with the right tools Cardano Foundation/Project Catalyst, Avalanche, Masumi, FLock.io, zkPass, Midnight, See3 and Blockchain for Good Alliance (BGA).

Hundreds of you stepped up to build and ship!

Main Challenge Winners

We express our deepest gratitude to the expert judging panel who offered their time to evaluate the final 7 projects Ahmed M. Amer (EMURGO Labs & EMURGO Africa), Aouatef Khelloqi (RadicalxChange Foundation), Nimo Rotem (ScalingX Web3 Accelerator), Adaku Jennifer Agwunobi, PhD (Oxford Blockchain Society) and Joseph Kibur (Yaya Labs)!

There were many solid projects, but there had to be one winner, so after careful deliberation, the judges determined the following winners of the Championship main Challenge: "Blockchain for Development". The top-2 will be receiving a Jambo2 phone from our partner Jambo!

🥇 CrisisChain – ensures aid reaches the right hands fast, using blockchain to track, verify, and deliver relief where it matters most. By Dibora Shibeshi,  Leyutsega Abebaw, and Hana Tamiru.
🥈 KweliVote – Kwelivote verifies voters instantly using fingerprints, secure, private, and blockchain powered. By Samuel Njiraini & Eli Mutitu.
🥉Amana CE – is bringing transparency, trust and reduced bureaucracy to digitalise and manage savings cooperatives (SACCOs). By John Ndigirigi, Victor Muriithi, and Kagwe.

We also commend the other finalists for great work: ArkTek Voting, Amana Chain, StudyMile and Vardana, and we look forward to following them on the continued journey!

How to Win $30k Worth of Bounty Prizes

While we saw encouraging interest across all tracks, the majority of submissions fell short of the expected technical maturity. However, these teams displayed strong intent and effort: qualities we believe deserve structured follow-up.

In June, there is another chance for all projects (and new) to continue to build. This time with more hands-on, structured support every Saturday. As before, you can also always get help by messaging on Telegram anytime outside these Saturday sessions.

1️⃣ New builders are welcome. There is plenty of time to build a competitive project. Beginners and seasoned developers are very welcome. Most of the current builders come with zero prior experience so spread the word to your smartest friends!
2️⃣ Weekly Saturday Online Hacks starts on June 7th. Register for all the events via Lu.ma: https://lu.ma/afblockchamp and join in Discord to get hands-on support and feedback on everything each Saturday: https://discord.com/invite/dPEjbzyC. You can get a new link by asking in the official TG: https://t.me/AfricanBlockChamp.
3️⃣ Join remotely from anywhere in Africa. All we ask is that you are committed and open to challenges and new technologies.

If you are a driven community owner, then you can reach out to [email protected] with a proposal to organise an in-person hackathon. We are open to providing outcome-based support to select communities.

The final submission deadline is on Sunday, June 29th, 21:00 GMT. We will share an updated link for submissions in due course.

Best,
Simon Sällström
